Labor Day Weekend Death Toll at Five

Frankfort, KY - Preliminary reports indicate that five people have lost their lives in five crashes on Kentucky's roadways thus far this Labor Day Weekend holiday. The fatalities occurred in Casey, Clark, Knox, Trimble, and Whitley counties. Three of the fatal crashes are believed to be alcohol related. One victim was wearing a helmet and the four other victims were not wearing safety belts.

During the 2001 Labor Day holiday period, 12 people were killed in 12 fatal crashes on Kentucky's roadways. Three of those fatal crashes involved alcohol and only three of the victims were wearing a safety belt. A seat belt is the motorist's best defense against a drunk driver.

The official Labor Day holiday began at 6 p.m. Friday, August 30 and continues until 11:59 p.m., Monday, September 3. As the holiday weekend winds down and motorists prepare for their return trips, the Kentucky State Police would like to re-emphasis the importance of driving defensively, allowing ample time to arrive at your destination safely, buckling up and properly restrain child passengers. Troopers will continue their efforts throughout the holiday by focusing their attention on traditionally high crash locations.

Motorists can help law enforcement officers by reporting erratic drivers to the KSP hotline at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers may remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number, if possible.
