Memorial Day Weekend Death Toll
Currently Stands at Two

(FRANKFORT, KY) - Preliminary reports indicate that two people have lost their lives in one crash on Kentucky's roadways thus far this Memorial Day Weekend holiday. The fatality occurred in Rowan County. The fatal crash is not believed to be alcohol related. Only one of the victims was wearing a safety belt.

During the 2001 Memorial Day holiday period, ten people were killed in ten fatal crashes on Kentucky's roadways. Three of those fatal crashes involved alcohol and only one of the victims was wearing a safety belt. A seat belt is the motorist's best defense against a drunk driver.

The official Memorial Day holiday, which began at 6 p.m. Friday, May 24, continues until 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 27. As the holiday weekend winds down and motorists prepare for their return trips, the Kentucky State Police would like to re-emphasis the importance of driving defensively, allowing ample time to arrive at your destination safely, buckle up and properly restrain child passengers. Troopers will continue their efforts throughout the holiday by focusing their attention on traditionally high crash locations.

Motorists can help law enforcement officers by reporting erratic drivers to the KSP hotline at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers may remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number, if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
