5 Die on Kentucky Roadways During New Year's Holiday
Frankfort, KY - Preliminary statistics* indicate that five people died in four separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways this New Year's holiday. The number of fatalities decreased drastically from the five-day 2002 holiday period during which 12 people died in 12 crashes. However, 21 people died on Kentucky's roadways from Friday morning through midnight January 1.
Of the five fatal New Year's holiday crashes, preliminary data indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in two of the accidents and one of the victims was a pedestrian. Two of the five victims were not wearing safety belts.
Single fatality crashes occurred in Clay, Lawrence and Wayne counties. A double fatality crash occurred in Hopkins county.
The official New Year's holiday period ran from 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2002 through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, January 01, 2003. All statistics are from that time period.
Preliminary information indicates 906 people were killed on Kentucky roadways in 2002, up 56 from 2001. This number is expected to rise over the next 30 days as law enforcement agencies continue to report crashes.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
