Date of News Release: 07/30/2007
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that nine people died in nine separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 23 through Sunday, July 29, 2007.
Seven of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and four of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Four of the fatalities were the result of crashes that involved the suspected use of alcohol. One of the victims was operating a motorcycle and one was a pedestrian.
Single-fatality crashes occurred in Campbell Daviess, Graves, Knott, Marion, Oldham, Todd, Trimble and Woodford counties.
Through July 29, preliminary statistics* indicate that 480 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 19 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 389 motor vehicle fatalities, 225 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 53 motorcycle fatalities, 30 were not wearing helmets. Of the 19 ATV fatalities, 15 were not wearing helmets. Eighteen pedestrians and one bicyclist have been killed. A total of 111 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
