Twenty-two Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (July 9 through July 15)

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 22 people died in 19 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 9 through Sunday, July 15, 2007.

Seventeen of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and 11 of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of two victims is unknown at this time. Four of the victims were operating motorcycles and two were not wearing helmets. Five of the fatalities were the result of crashes that involved the suspected use of alcohol.

Bourbon, Hopkins and Whitley counties each reported one double-fatality crash. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Bath, Carter, Clark, Fayette, Fleming, Jefferson, Jessamine, Knox, Lewis, McLean, Perry, Powell, Todd, Union and Woodford counties. One pedestrian was killed in Cumberland County.

Through July 15, preliminary statistics* indicate that 452 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is 25 fewer than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 365 motor vehicle fatalities, 213 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 50 motorcycle fatalities, 29 were not wearing helmets. Of the 19 ATV fatalities, 15 were not wearing helmets. Seventeen pedestrians have been killed and a total of 102 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
