Date of News Release: 05/14/2007
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 12 people died in eight separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, May 7 through Sunday, May 13, 2007.
Ten of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and two were pedestrians. Five of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Four of the fatalities were the result of crashes that involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Boyle, Fayette, Gallatin and Henderson counties each reported one double-fatality crash. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Fayette, Jefferson, Meade and Todd counties.
Through May 13, preliminary statistics* indicate that 285 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2007. This is six more than reported for this time period in 2006. Of the 248 motor vehicle fatalities, 147 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 13 motorcycle fatalities, six were not wearing helmets. Of the 13 ATV fatalities, 12 were not wearing helmets. Eleven pedestrians have been killed and a total of 71 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
