Kentucky State Police Trooper Killed in Motor Vehicle Crash in Pike County
Date of News Release: 12/19/2006
(Pikeville, Ky.) - On Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at 6:20 p.m. (EST), Kentucky State Police Trooper Jonathan K. Leonard was involved in a two vehicle crash on US 119, in the community of Sidney in Pike County. Trooper Leonard, 28 years of age, was fatally injured in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Deputy Coroner Mike Hall.
The driver of the second vehicle, Eugene Sisco, Jr, 45 years of age, was transported to Pikeville Medical Center and subsequently flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
"The loss of Trooper Leonard is tremendous and it permeates throughout the entire Kentucky State Police family," said KSP Commissioner Jack Adams. "We are all saddened beyond words. Our sympathy goes out to Trooper Leonard's family and I ask that you also keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
Trooper Leonard was a three year veteran of the department. He served his entire KSP career at the Pikeville Post.
In the 58-year history of the Kentucky State Police, Trooper Leonard is the 24th Trooper to lose his life in the line of duty and is the first since Trooper Johnny Edrington was killed in Laurel County on December 21, 1988.
A Kentucky State Police Accident Reconstruction Team will be back on the scene on Wednesday, December 20, 2006, to continue the investigation. Periodic road closures are expected between 9:00 AM and noon.
The Kentucky State Police were assisted at the scene by Big Creek Fire Department, Appalachian First Response Ambulance, Pike County Sheriff's Department, Belfry Fire Department and Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement.
The investigation into the crash is continuing by the Kentucky State Police.
NOTE TO MEDIA--All requests for interviews with Trooper Leonard's family should be directed to Lt. Phil Crumpton or TFC Scott Hopkins. The family requests that you respect their privacy at this time and coordinate your requests through the department.
