Seventeen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Oct. 16 through Oct. 22)
Date of News Release: 10/23/2006
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 17 people died in 15 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, through Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006.
All of the fatalities involved motor vehicles. Preliminary data* indicates that alcohol was a factor in four of the crashes. Thirteen of the 17 motor vehicle victims were not wearing seat belts and the seatbelt status of one of the victims is not known.
A double-fatality crash occurred in Daviess County and another in Shelby County. The remaining single-fatality motor vehicle crashes occurred in Ballard, Barren, Bullitt, Caldwell, Calloway, Carter, Clay, Floyd, Graves, Henry, Jefferson, Pike and Powell counties.
Through Oct. 22, 2006, a total of 721 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 70 fewer than were reported for this time period in 2005. Of the 721 fatalities, 597 were motor vehicle victims, 387 of whom were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of 38 of the victims is not known. Sixty-seven fatalities involved motorcycles, and 43 of those victims were not wearing helmets. There were eight ATV crash fatalities and none of the victims were wearing helmets. There were three bicycle victims, one of whom was not wearing a helmet, and 46 pedestrians have been killed.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
