Eighteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Oct. 2 through Oct. 8)
Date of News Release: 10/10/2006
(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 18 people died in 15 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, through Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006.
Thirteen of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and one involved a motorcycle. Four pedestrians were killed. Preliminary data* indicates that alcohol was a factor in two of the motor vehicle crashes. Eight of the motor vehicle victims were not wearing seat belts and the seat belt status of one of the victims is not known. The motorcycle victim was not wearing a helmet.
A quadruple-fatality crash occurred in Monroe County. Nine single-fatality crashes occurred in Bath, Calloway, Daviess, Jefferson, Lincoln, Meade, Rowan, Warren and Wolfe counties. The pedestrian fatalities occurred in Boone, Calloway, Casey and Russell counties. The motorcycle fatality occurred in Floyd County.
Through Oct. 8, 2006, a total of 674 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 83 fewer than were reported for this time period in 2005. Of the 674 fatalities, 554 were motor vehicle victims, 353 of whom were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of 37 of the victims is not known. Sixty-five fatalities involved motorcycles, and 41 of the victims were not wearing helmets. There were eight ATV crash fatalities and none of the victims were wearing helmets. There were three bicycle victims, one of whom was not wearing a helmet.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
