Nineteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (August 14 through August 20)

Date of News Release: 08/21/2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 9 people died in 9 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, through Sunday, August 20, 2006.

Preliminary data indicates that alcohol was a factor in one of the motor vehicle fatalities and one of the pedestrian fatalities. Six of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and three pedestrians were killed. None of the six motor vehicle victims were wearing a seat belt.

The pedestrians were killed in Fayette, Jefferson and Marshall counties. The six motor vehicle fatalities occurred in Boone, Calloway, Jefferson, Laurel, Rowan and Taylor counties.

Through August 20, 2006, a total of 550 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 34 fewer than were reported for this time period in 2005. Of the 550 fatalities, 23 were pedestrians and 55 were motorcyclists. Thirty-four of the motorcyclists were not wearing helmets. There were six ATV crash victims, none of whom were wearing helmets. There was one bicycle victim. Of the 456 motor vehicle fatalities, 292 victims were not wearing seatbelts and the seatbelt status of 32 of the victims is not known.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
