(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 23 people died in 20 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 31, 2006, through Sunday, August 6, 2006.

Preliminary data indicates that alcohol was a factor in seven of the crashes. Seventeen of the crashes involved motor vehicles and two involved all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). One of the victims was a pedestrian. Twelve of the 20 motor vehicle victims were not wearing seat belts and the seatbelt status of two of the victims in not known. Neither of the two ATV victims was wearing a helmet.

One triple-fatality crash occurred in Boone County and one double-fatality crash occurred in Warren County. The remaining 15 single-fatality motor vehicle crashes occurred in Butler, Campbell, Carter, Daviess, Fulton, Hart, Jefferson, Lewis, Logan, Meade, Menifee, Pulaski, Russell, Shelby and Simpson counties. The ATV crashes occurred in Harlan County in separate incidents and the pedestrian was killed in Trimble County.

Through August 6, 2006, a total of 515 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 28 fewer than those reported for this time period in 2005. Of the 515 fatalities, 29 were pedestrians and 51 were motorcyclists, 31 of whom were not wearing helmets. There were six ATV crash victims, six of whom were not wearing helmets. There was one bicycle victim. Of the 428 motor vehicle fatalities, 271 victims were not wearing seatbelts and the seatbelt status of 31 of the victims is not known.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
