Eight Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (July 24 through July 30)

Date of News Release: 07/31/2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that eight people died in eight separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 24, 2006, through Sunday, July 30, 2006.

Preliminary data indicates that alcohol was not a factor in any of the crashes. Six of the crashes involved motor vehicles and one involved a motorcycle. One of the victims was a pedestrian. Four of the six motor vehicle victims were not wearing seat belts and the motorcycle victim was not wearing a helmet.

The motor vehicle crashes occurred in Bell, Johnson, Livingston, Monroe, Scott and Whitley counties. The motorcycle crash occurred in Whitley County and the pedestrian was killed in Jefferson County.

Through July 30, 2006, a total of 488 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 38 fewer than those reported for this time period in 2005. Of the 488 fatalities, 28 were pedestrians and 50 were motorcyclists, 30 of whom were not wearing helmets. There were four ATV crash victims, three of whom were not wearing helmets, and there was one bicycle victim. Of the 405 motor vehicle fatalities, 258 victims were not wearing seatbelts and the seatbelt status of 29 of the victims is not known.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
