KSP Works Toward CALEA Re-accreditation
Date of News Release: 05/02/2006
(FRANKFORT, Ky.)--- The Kentucky State Police (KSP) is in the process of being re-accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Renewal of the accreditation, which is voluntary, takes place every three years and involves a comprehensive evaluation of the agency's programs and performance, said KSP Capt. Mike Crawford, Commander of the Strategic Planning Branch.
"Re-accreditation helps us evaluate not just our agency's programs, activities and operations, but also our relationship with other agencies," he said. "It assists us with long-range operational and strategic plans, crime prevention, community involvement, training opportunities and career development and also helps us control liability insurance costs."
The process of re-accreditation to ensure maintenance of CALEA standards involves review of every aspect of the agency, including management, supervision, field operations and support services.
The primary purpose of CALEA is to improve law enforcement service by creating a national body of standards developed by law enforcement professionals. The organization was established in 1979 and derives its authority from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), the National Sheriff's Association (NSA) and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).
KSP Commissioner Mark Miller said he welcomes the opportunity to identify areas that need improvement to ensure KSP's tradition of excellence.
"Accreditation by CALEA is an achievement that recognizes professionalism, excellence and competence," said Miller. "The accreditation process gives us at KSP the opportunity to perform rigorous self-assessment and identify areas where we already meet or exceed CALEA standards."
As part of the upcoming on-site review, three law enforcement professionals from outside of the Commonwealth will spend a week with the agency as they visit and interview personnel at headquarters and selected posts and branches. At each of these sites, the assessors will take the opportunity to review policies, procedures, and documentation, or "proofs of compliance", as well as listen to our employees speak to how the agency complies with CALEA standards. Lastly, as part of a public information session, the Kentucky State Police is providing the toll-free number of 1-866-438-2550 for the general public to call and provide comments regarding the agency to the CALEA on-site team. This public information phone line will be open to the public on Tuesday, May 9 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (EDT).
All comments are welcome.
