Eight Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (March 20 through March 26)

Date of News Release: 03/27/2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that eight people died in seven separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, March 20, 2006, through Sunday, March 26, 2006.

Preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in three of the seven crashes. Four of the victims were not wearing seat belts and the seatbelt status of one of the victims is not known.

The double fatality crash occurred in Larue County. The six single fatality crashes occurred in Butler, Jefferson, Kenton, Magoffin, Meade and Warren counties.

Through March 26, 2006, a total of 145 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 49 fewer than reported for this time period in 2005. Of those 145 fatalities, ten were pedestrians and nine were motorcylcists (five of whom were not wearing helmets). Of the 126 motor vehicle fatalities, 75 were not wearing seatbelts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
