Twelve Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Jan. 30 through Feb. 5)

Date of News Release: 02/06/2006

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 12 people died in 11 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, through Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006.

Of the 11 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in two of the crashes and five of the victims were not wearing seat belts.

One double fatality crash occurred in Martin County. Three single fatality crashes occurred in Boone County. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Jefferson, Graves, Boyd, Casey, Lincoln and Warren counties. A pedestrian was killed in a Campbell County crash.

Through Feb. 5, 2006, a total of 59* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 23 fewer than reported for this time period in 2005. Twenty-three of these 59 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
