Twenty Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Oct. 31 through Nov. 6)

Date of Release: 11/07/05

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 20 people died in 19 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, Oct. 31 through Sunday, Nov. 6.

Of the 19 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in five of the crashes and 11 of the victims were not wearing seat belts. One of the fatalities was riding a motorcycle and not wearing a helmet.

Marion County reported one double fatality crash. Bullitt and Floyd counties each reported two single fatality crashes. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Breathitt, Christian, Clark, Daviess, Grayson, Green, Hopkins, Jefferson, Larue, Pendleton, Perry, Pike, Shelby and Taylor counties.

Through Nov. 6, 2005, a total of 830* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 16 more than reported for this time period in 2004. Four hundred and seventy-six of these 830 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
