Accelerated KSP Cadet Class Begins
Two cadet classes running simultaneously a KSP first

Date of Release: 10/02/05

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Members of the Kentucky State Police (KSP) 85th Cadet Class, an accelerated class, began their 11-week training at the KSP Academy in Frankfort today.

This class, the second one of its kind for KSP, is comprised of 24 law enforcement officers with at least three years of previous Kentucky law enforcement experience. The accelerated classes last 11 weeks, as opposed to the standard 22 weeks of training cadets normally undergo.

KSP Commissioner Mark L. Miller says the accelerated program is a boon to both seasoned officers and to the state. "Officers who come into our accelerated classes already bring a wealth of knowledge with them," said Miller. "This allows us to train them and get them on the road more quickly, providing more KSP law enforcement coverage to Kentucky's citizens."

The accelerated class will run concurrently with the final 11 weeks of Cadet Class #84, a standard class that began in July, which is a first for KSP. The two classes will graduate together on Dec. 20, 2005.

During their 11-weeks of training, KSP cadets learn the laws and statutes of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the history of the Kentucky State Police organization, as well as how to conduct accident and criminal investigations, drive pursuit vehicles and DUI enforcement and many other aspects of becoming a Kentucky State Police trooper.

The Kentucky State Police Accelerated Entry Program was created to expedite the selection, training and placement of individuals who already possess the skills, experience and certification meeting Kentucky's Peace Officer Professional Standards.

For more information about how to become a Kentucky State Police Trooper, contact the KSP Recruitment Branch at 502-695-6320 or visit the KSP web site at www.kentuckystatepolice.org.
