Seventeen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week
(July 11 through July 17)

Date of Release: 07/18/05

(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that 17 people died in 15 separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways from Monday, July 11 through Sunday, July 17.

Of the 15 fatal crashes, preliminary data* indicates alcohol was a suspected factor in two of the crashes and 10 of the victims were not wearing seat belts. The seat belt status of two of the fatalities is not known at this time. One of the fatalities was riding a motorcycle and wearing a helmet.

One double fatality crash occurred in Rowan County and one double fatality crash occurred in Union County. Two single fatality crashes were reported in Campbell County. Single fatality crashes also occurred in Bullitt, Carter, Gallatin, Jefferson, Laurel, Lewis, Lyon, Madison, Montgomery, Muhlenberg and Pulaski counties.

Through July 17, 2005, a total of 483* people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways. This is 12 less than reported for this time period in 2004. Two hundred and seventy-nine of these 483 fatalities were not wearing seat belts.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555 (in the state of Kentucky only, does not work out of state). Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
