Madisonville Woman Charged With Theft

Date of News Release: 03/06/2014

Madisonville, KY (Hopkins County) - The Kentucky State Police has charged a Madisonville woman with theft after conducting an investigation regarding the misuse of funds from a youth basketball league.

On Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at approximately 4:27 p.m., KSP Detective Lonnie Kavanaugh arrested Mia C. Higens, 49, of Madisonville, KY. Ms. Higens was charged with one count of Theft By Unlawful Taking Under $500 which is a class A misdemeanor. She was lodged in the Hopkins County Jail.

An investigation began on January 29, 2014 after the KSP was contacted by the Hopkins County Attorney's Office. The investigation resulted in the finding of suspicious financial activity for the years of 2011, 2012, and 2013 in the non-profit Hopkins County Central All-American Basketball Association youth basketball checking account. It was discovered that several improper expenditures were made from the non-profit's checking account, including clothes, toys, gourmet food, diet pills and other items that would not be used in the operation of a non-profit, youth basketball league. This account was under the exclusive control of Ms. Higens. She had served in the capacity of president and treasurer of the youth league for the past few years and was the sole signatory of the checking account.

The investigation is continuing by Detective Kavanaugh.
