KSP Warns Of Possible Scam
Date of News Release: 05/22/2014
(Hazard, KY) - Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard wishes to advise the public of a possible scam that is currently occurring in its coverage area.
KSP has received and is investigating several reports in Breathitt County of a group posing as a private paving company, advising individuals that they will do paving work, home repairs, or work related to residential electric utility service. These subjects appear to be targeting the elderly as victims. Victims have advised of having dollar amounts altered on checks they have written to these individuals, in which the amount written was increased without the victim's knowledge or consent. Others report having checks stolen while being distracted by perpetrators. Other local law enforcement agencies have received similar complaints in Knott, Letcher, and Perry counties.
KSP advises anyone who encounters subjects offering similar services, to use caution and discretion in dealing with them. It is advised not to accept labor services that you have not personally requested, or pay for services with a blank check. If anyone has assisting information concerning these complaints, please contact KSP Post 13 Hazard, at 606-435-6069, or any local law enforcement agency.
