Pursuit in Bath, Montgomery, Clark Counties

Date of News Release: 10/02/2013

(Owingsville, KY) - On October 2, 2013 at 10:37 a.m., Kentucky State Police Morehead Trooper Scott Ferrell observed a black Toyota Camry traveling in excess of 90 mph traveling westbound on Interstate 64 in Bath County. Trooper Ferrell attempted to stop the vehicle. Willie Burnett IV, 20 of Lexington began to increase speed in an attempt to evade Trooper Ferrell. Mr. Burnett was pursued at speeds in excess of 115 miles per hour. The pursuit continued into Clark County when Mr. Burnett was stopped by a tire deflation device. Mr. Burnett then exited the vehicle while still traveling at approximately 90 miles per hour. Mr. Burnett then fled into a field where units from multiple agencies were able to take him into custody. Mr. Burnett was taken to Saint Joseph East in Mt. Sterling where he was treated and released with minor injuries. Mr. Burnett was charged with Operating Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs, 1st Offense, Speeding, 26 mph or over, Fleeing or Evading Police 1st Degree, Reckless Driving, Driving on Suspended License, Failure to Wear Seat Belt, Improper Passing, Possession of Marijuana, Drug Paraphernalia, Buy/Possess 1st Offense, Possession of Alcoholic Beverage by a Minor, Possession of Handgun by Minor and Warrant Service from Fayette County. Mr. Burnett was lodged at the Montgomery County Detention Center in Mt. Sterling. Additional charges are pending in both Montgomery and Clark Counties. The incident remains under investigation by Trooper Scott Ferrell.
