Kentucky State Police Post 5 Launches CodeRED Weather Warning

Date of News Release: 10/14/2013

(Campbellsburg, KY) - Kentucky State Police Post 5 has recently upgraded their CodeRED system to include CodeRED Weather Warning to provide the community automated severe weather alerts. The opt-in service will automatically notify enrolled citizens of tornado, flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings just minutes after an alert is issued by The National Weather Service (NWS).

To receive severe weather warnings, residents must first visit community enrollment pages found at www.henrycountygov.com, www.owencounty.ky.gov, and www.trimblecounty.ky.gov. Citizens are encouraged to enter both a cell phone number and email address and then select the types of weather warnings they would like to receive and how they would like to receive them.

Kevin Woosley, KSP Post 5's Communications Supervisor, encourages all citizens to enroll in CodeRED Weather Warning. "The CodeRED system has provided our post area with numerous benefits; we use it to keep our residents informed by issuing general and emergency related messages. Now having CodeRED Weather Warning is an additional tool used to keep our citizens safe with precious extra time to prepare during severe weather," Woosley said.

The advanced new system is based on The National Weather Service polygon methodology, only contacting those citizens in the direct path of the projected weather.

"The system's advanced technology will quickly notify residents of severe weather and eliminate false alarms. This is a valuable feature of CodeRED Weather Warning because those citizens who do receive an alert will be able to plan immediately," Woosley said. "CodeRED Weather Warning will keep our citizens safe if severe weather threatens, which is why everyone should enroll and keep their information up to date."

The severe weather alert service comes as an enhancement to Post 5's current CodeRED system, which informs citizens of time sensitive information that may impact their safety.
