Ohio Man Killed in Crash on I-71

Date of News Release: 06/22/2013

(Sparta, KY) -- An Ohio man was killed and two others were injured in a crash this morning (06/22/13) on I-71 in Gallatin County. Troopers responded to the crash after Gallatin County Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call at 3:31 a.m. Preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle, driven by 19 year old Timothy Hafenbreidel of Bismarck, ND, was traveling north at the 54 mile marker when the vehicle struck a guardrail on the right shoulder of the road. Hafenbreidel then overcorrected and the vehicle went into the median where it overturned several times. Hafenbreidel received life threatening injuries and was flown by Air Methods, Inc. to the University of Cincinnati Hospital. A passenger, 31 year old Ricky Lugo of Fostoria, OH, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Gallatin County Coroner. Another passenger, 23 year old Kevin Clark of Pensacola, FL was flown by PHI, Inc. to the University of Cincinnati Hospital for life threatening injuries. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Trooper Brandon Maupin, an accident reconstructionist, is leading the ongoing investigation. Trooper Maupin was assisted at the scene by Gallatin County EMS and the Gallatin County Fire Department.
