Trimble County Man Arrested After Two-State Pursuit

Date of News Release: 05/08/2013

(Sparta, KY) -- A Trimble County man was arrested this morning after leading police on a high-speed chase. Deputies in Switzerland County, IN attempted to stop Derek Snell, 19 years old from Bedford, KY, after observing him driving recklessly. Snell failed to stop and the deputies pursued the vehicle to the state line. The deputies ended their pursuit at the Markland Dam and Troopers with KSP Post 5 observed the vehicle at mile marker 55 of I-71 North. Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle but Snell again fled. Troopers attempted to use spike strips to stop the vehicle but Snell swerved toward the Trooper and he was unable to deploy the spikes. The pursuit continued into Boone County before Snell's vehicle struck two other vehicles at mile marker 182. There were no injuries in the collision. Snell was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, Theft of an Automobile, Fleeing and Evading, Wanton Endangerment, DUI 1st, Speeding, Reckless Driving, No Insurance, No Operator's License, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Snell was lodged at the Carroll County Detention Center.

Lieutenant Howard Rice is leading the investigation. Post 5 was assisted by Troopers from KSP Post 6 and the Boone County Sheriff's Office.
