News Release

Single-Vehicle Crash In Hardin County Claims The Lives Of Tennessee Couple

Date of News Release: 05/23/2013

(ELIZABETHTOWN, KY) -- On Thursday, May 23, 2013 at approximately 3:59 p.m. ET Post 4 Dispatchers received a call from a northbound motorist on Interstate 65 advising that a vehicle that was southbound ran off the roadway and struck a tree. Upon Trooper's arrival they discovered a 2006 Toyota Avalon in a creek bed adjacent to the interstate at the 98 mile marker. The driver of the vehicle, 75-year-old Claire R. Kahane from Nashville, TN was found deceased inside the vehicle. There was also severe damage to the driver's side front caused by striking a tree near the creek bed. Further investigation revealed that there was evidence of a passenger being in the vehicle at the time of the crash. A search began and at approximately 6:38 p.m. ET firefighters discovered the body of 78-year-old Charles S. Kahane approximately 974 feet south of the crash site lying face up in the creek bed. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by the Hardin County Coroner, Dr. William Lee. Preliminary investigation revealed that the Avalon left the roadway for unknown reasons, struck a tree, and came to final rest in the creek bed. Trooper Josh Cummings is conducting the ongoing investigation. He was assisted at the scene by other Troopers, Hardin County EMS, Central Hardin and Elizabethtown Fire and Rescue.
