Post 4 Reports Increase In DUI Arrests And Decrease In Motor Vehicle Crashes For April

(ELIZABETHTOWN, KY) -- The Kentucky State Police Post 04 in Elizabethtown covers 8 counties. They include: Hardin, Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Meade, Breckinridge, Larue, and Grayson. The West Region covers 8 post areas. They are: Post 1, Post 2, Post 3, Post 4, Post 5, Post 12, Post 15, and Post 16.
We will continue to conduct traffic safety checkpoints through May and the rest of 2013 looking for impaired drivers, unrestrained motorists, and other traffic violations at various locations throughout our post area.
For the month of April 2013, Post 04 Troopers and Detectives wrote a total of 1,478 citations. We removed 66 drunk drivers from Kentucky roadways and cited 451 speeders. 183 violators were charged for failure to wear a seatbelt and 8 citations were for failure to use a child restraint. We investigated 70 crashes and conducted 2,468 vehicle inspections. 888 motorists were given a courtesy notice in lieu of a traffic citation for minor traffic offenses. We assisted 121 motorists stranded on Kentucky roadways and answered over 1,164 citizenís complaints. We were involved in 745 special details and conducted over 27 community programs which reached over 1,500 citizens of the Commonwealth. Our Detectives and Troopers opened over 58 criminal cases, made 224 criminal arrests, and served over 98 criminal court documents. In addition, we contacted over 478 victims of crimes on cases that we investigated. Additionally, we conducted over 403 school and business security checks throughout the entire Post 4 area. In total, Post 04 Troopers, Detectives, and Command Staff logged over 9,764 hours of service for the Kentucky citizens we served.
In addition to the Trooper and Detective monthly activity, Post 4 dispatchers logged over 2,300 data entries while still answering hundreds of calls from citizens in our area.
Preliminary statistics* indicate that five people died in five separate crashes on Kentuckyís roadways from Monday, Apr. 22 through Sunday, Apr. 28, 2013.
One single-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Boyd, Daviess, Franklin, Jefferson and Wolfe. The victims in Boyd, Franklin, Jefferson and Wolfe counties were not wearing seat belts. The Boyd County and Jefferson County crashes involved the suspected use of alcohol.
Through Apr. 28, preliminary statistics* indicate that 165 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 48 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 139 motor vehicle fatalities, 70 victims were not wearing seat belts. Six of the 11 motorcycle fatalities were not wearing helmets. The one ATV fatality was not wearing a helmet. One bicycle rider has been killed. Twelve pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 32 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of Apr. 28, Kentucky has had 33 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
