6 Dead, 3 Injured In Fiery Crash On Interstate 65 In Hardin County

Date of News Release: 03/02/2013

(GLENDALE, KY) -- On Saturday, March 02, 2013 at approximately 11:13 a.m. ET Post 4 received a call of a fatality crash on the northbound side of Interstate 65 approximately 3 miles south of Glendale, KY. Upon arrival by Troopers, it was quickly realized that there were multiple fatalities involved. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2012 Kenworth tractor trailer driven by 47-year-old Ibrahim Fetic of Troy, Michigan was northbound on I-65. A 1999 Ford Expedition driven by 62-year-old James Gollnow and a 2007 Toyota Avalon driven by 57-year-old Janet Collins of Memphis, TN were also northbound on I-65. The Kenworth struck the Expedition from behind and the Expedition immediately caught fire. It then struck the rear end of the Toyota. The Expedition came to final rest in the grass just off the northbound emergency lane and became totally consumed by flames. Two of the eight occupants in the Expedition were able to escape the vehicle, but suffered serious injuries. The other 6 occupants died in the vehicle. Killed in the crash were James Gollnow-62, Barbara Gollnow-62, Sarina Gollnow-18, Soledad Smith-8, Gabriel Zumiga-10, and Marion Champnoise-92. Injured were 15-year-old Hope Hoth and 12-year-old Aidian Ejnik. Hope was taken to a Lexington hospital and Aidian was taken to Kosairís in Louisville. The family in the Expedition were returning from a trip from Orlando, FL and headed home. All were from Marion, Wisconsin. Janet Collins suffered minor injuries and was not transported. Fetic was not injured. Det. Terry Whittaker is heading up the ongoing investigation.

At approximately 11:29 a.m. ET a second crash occurred on the southbound side of Interstate 65 while Troopers were investigating the first crash. That crash involved 4 vehicles with 3 people suffering injuries, one of which was critical. Details of that crash are not available at this time. This release will be updated once that information is received. Post 4 reconstructionist, Tpr. Brad Riley, is leading that investigation. Multiple reconstructionists from E-town and other posts assisted in both crashes.
