Ghost Out Program Held at McLean County High School
Date of News Release: 04/23/2013
WHAT: A Ghost Out program at the McLean County High School with the Kentucky State Police and other agencies.
WHEN: Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 9am for mock crash. The mock court trail will be held at 1pm at the McLean County Judicial Complex.
WHERE: McLean County High School Football Stadium ~ KY 136 East of Calhoun.
WHO: Emergency Response Units; McLean County High School student body and staff; PHI; Owensboro Health; Judge Brian Crick and McLean County Attorney Josh Searcy.
WHY: The Kentucky State Police would like to invite our media partners to the McLean County High School (KY 136 East of Calhoun). The program is called "Ghost Out" and is a nationally recognized curriculum for schools. "Ghost Out" is a drug and alcohol program designed to target the teenage population by visiting high schools. The program addresses issues such as drug and alcohol use, making risky decisions, and the consequences associated with these behaviors. Program highlights included someone disguised as the "Grim Reaper" who roams the classroom to select 15 "victims." These victims represent the average number of people killed in alcohol or drug-related crashes during a school day. The victims were separated from the other students and declared deceased.
The entire student body has been taking part of this program since Monday which includes inmates from area detention centers to discuss poor decision making.
At 9am, a mock collision will take place in front of the entire student body and staff. Area law enforcement and fire personnel will recreate a collision scene involving a DUI operator (who will ultimately be arrested and charged with Murder). Local air medics will land a helicopter(s) and take chosen student(s) to Owensboro Health for treatment. The 15 chosen students will then tour Owensboro Health.
At 1pm, the 15 students will see their charged peer at McLean County Circuit Court (KY 81/Main Street ~ Calhoun) handcuffed and in prisoner attire. He/she will stand in front of McLean County Judge Brian Crick as Honorable Josh Searcy prosecutes the charged.
