Post 15 Telecommunicators Key to Success

Date of News Release: 04/15/2013

(Columbia, Ky.) -- April 14-20 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a time set aside to recognize the more than 200,000 individuals throughout the U.S. who play critical roles in the delivery of public safety services. Often called the "unsung heroes of public safety," these men and women provide a lifeline to both citizens in need and officers in the field. They serve as an unseen, but vital link in keeping law enforcement officers and the public safe at all times of the day or night. The Kentucky State Police employs 185 telecommunicators at its 16 posts throughout the state. In 2012, they answered a total of 555,123 requests for assistance.

Post 15 Commander, Captain Jeff Suratt said, "Our dispatchers are the lifeline for our Troopers at Post 15. Their years of experience and work ethic make them key to the success of our operations". Post 15 has 9 Telecommunicators with a total of 119 years of experience. Telecommunications Supervisor Tammy Wheeler stated, "Our number one goal is to make sure our Troopers get home safely. We have to be great at multi-tasking to insure that we provide great service to our Troopers and our communities".

Post 15 Telecommunicators answered 16,314 calls for service in 2012. In addition to dispatching for Troopers in the 11 county Post 15 service area , Post 15 Telecommunicators provide NCIC support services for Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Monroe and Metcalfe County.
