Murder Arrest in Lawrence County

(Ashland, KY) -- On Friday October 4, 2013 at 628 pm the Kentucky State Police in Ashland received a report of a vehicle traveling Northbound on US 23 in a reckless manner. Trooper Devan Cleaver located the vehicle and observed violations at which time he initiated his emergency equipment and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle accelerated and traveled at a high rate of speed in an attempt to elude Tpr. Cleaver. Tpr. Cleaver continued pursuing the vehicle, which turned onto KY 644. The vehicle continued eastbound on KY 644 at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner.
As the 2001 Tan Toyota Camry, operated by Joshua Fitzpatrick, passed the intersection of KY 644 and B Street control of the vehicle was lost. Fitzpatrick traveled into the westbound lane on KY 644 and into the path of a motorcycle operated by Johnny K Maynard Jr, age 40, of Catlettsburg, KY. At impact Maynard was thrown from the motorcycle and received several life threatening injuries.
Maynard was transported to Three Rivers Medical Center and pronounced deceased by Lawrence County Assistant Coroner Raymond Byrd at 840 pm.
It was later reported Joshua A. Fitzpatrick had been engaged in a domestic dispute in Paintsville earlier on that day and had fled the scene in a stolen tan 2001 Toyota Camry.
Joshua A. Fitzpatrick, age 34, of Paintsville, KY was arrested, lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center and charged with the following:
The following agencies responded and assisted during the course of the investigation: Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement, Louisa Police Department, Louisa Fire Department, Net care Ambulance Service, Lawrence County Coroner's Office.
The case remains under investigation by Detective Ben Cramer.
