Five Arrested on Theft Charges in Letcher County

(Hazard, KY) -- On May 2, 2013 at approximately 01:25 a.m. Kentucky State Police in Hazard received a call from Cumberland River Coal of a possible theft in progress at their mine site in the Whitesburg community of Letcher County.
The company stated that someone had stolen copper last week and the same vehicle had returned to their property. Troopers responded to the scene and in fact located the vehicle there and also five individuals. In their possession was property that belonged to the coal company.
The investigation continued and all the property being taken was located and returned to the company. The investigation led state police to arrest and charge those at the scene.
Arrested were 56-year old Gary W. Smith, 30-year old David K. Hall, 38-year old James O. Fields, 49-year old Belinda Hall, and 44-year old Tonda M. Adams all residing in the Whitesburg area. All 5 individuals were charged with Theft By Unlawful Taking 0\$500 and Criminal Trespass 2nd Degree and Lodged in the Letcher County Jail. Additional charges were filed on Gary W. Smith for being a Persistent Felony Offender, David K. Hall for Possession Of A Controlled Substance Not In The Proper Container, and Tonda M. Adams with Criminal Mischief 1st Degree. The investigation is continuing by Det. Chris Collins.
