Update to the Knott County Death Investigation

Date of News Release: 01/19/2013

(Hazard, Ky.) -- As a result of the investigation, it was determined that 34 year old Jerry B Combs of Wayland, KY had been in an altercation with Mr. Fugate's that resulted in his death. Jerry B. Combs was charged with the murder of Mr. Fugate and has been lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard, KY. Detective Chris Collins with KSP Post 13 in Hazard is in charge of the continuing investigation.

Knott County Death Investigation

Date of News Release: 01/18/2013

(Hazard, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police in Hazard received a call at 9:58 A.M. on January 18th, 2013 of an abandoned truck being located along a surface mining road in the Triplett Branch community of Knott County. Troopers from KSP Post 13 in Hazard responded to the scene & a routine vehicle registration check alerted Troopers that this vehicle was related to an active missing person investigation. A further search of the surrounding area by the Kentucky State Police Aircraft Section & KSP Post 13 Personnel was conducted and a body was recovered.

The victim has been identified as Eric Tysen Fugate, age 30 of Hindman who was reported to the Kentucky State Police as a missing person less than 24-hours earlier.

The victim was pronounced deceased by the Knott County Coroner at the scene.

An exact cause of death is unknown at this time, however; an autopsy will be performed at the Kentucky State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort. Detective Chris Collins with KSP Post 13 in Hazard is in charge of the Investigation which is on-going.
