Kentucky State Police Investigating Fayette County Meth Lab

Date of News Release: 04/30/2013

(Lexington, KY) -- The Kentucky State Police Frankfort Post is conducting a meth lab investigation in Fayette County. On Monday, April 29, 2013 at approximately, 5:30 pm, Troopers from the Frankfort Post were following up on information that a known suspect (Thomas John Stephens), with a prior Manufacturing Methamphetamine arrest and conviction, was possibly cooking meth again. During the course of the investigation, the Troopers ascertained the suspect's previous modus operandi of using hotel and motel rooms to cook meth. The Troopers followed up this information by looking for the suspect's vehicle in hotel and motel parking lots in Scott and Fayette Counties.

The suspect (Thomas John Stephens) was located in Fayette County at the Knights Inn off of Newtown Pike. Troopers attempted to communicate with Stephens, but he refused to communicate with them. Kentucky State Police Troopers, knowing that Stephens was on Parole, notified State Probation and Parole making them aware of their investigation.

State Parole Officers arrive on the scene, made entry into the room and then requested assistant from the Troopers. There was a strong chemical odor in the room consistent with the manufacturing of meth. Also in the room, Troopers locate a red phosphorous meth lab along with several other items that are consistent with the manufacture of meth. Thomas J. Stephens, Jenny R. Keller and a thirteen year juvenile were inside the room. The Lexington Department of Fire and EMS respond to the scene to assist, and decontaminate everyone. The Department of Family and Children were notified and the juvenile was taken to the UK Children's Hospital by EMS for evaluation.

Thomas John Stephens, age 39 and Jenny R. Keller, age 41 were arrested and lodged in the Fayette County Detention Center. Stephens was charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine 2nd offense, Controlled Substance Endangerment to Child 4th Degree and Parole Violation. Keller was charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine 1st offense and Controlled Substance Endangerment to Child 4th Degree. The Kentucky State Police Clandestine Lab Cleanup Team responded and remains on scene for cleanup and evidence collection.

The Kentucky State Police Frankfort Post was assisted by Kentucky State Police Drug Enforcement Special Investigation Branch, Lexington Division of Police, Lexington Fire and EMS, State Probation and Parole. The investigation is continuing by the Frankfort Post.
