News Release

Fatal Traffic Crash in McCreary County

Date of News Release: 08/28/2013

(LONDON, KY.) -- On Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at approximately 11:10 AM, the Kentucky State Police, Post 11 London, received a report of a two vehicle traffic crash, with a fatality, on HWY 92 near KY, 592 junction, in the Pine Knot community of McCreary County.

Upon arrival Traffic Crash Reconstructionist Trooper Craig Reed determined that, a black, 2010 Hyundai Genesis, operated by Benjamin Strunk, 23, of Revelo, Ky, was traveling West bound on Ky 92 in the East bound lane at a high rate of speed while allegedly involved in a street race with another vehicle and struck a Purple, 2007, Chrysler, PT Cruiser operated by Steven Maggiora, 53 of Strunk, Ky that was traveling East bound on Ky 92.

After impact the Chrysler, PT, Cruiser came to a final rest in the East bound lane of Ky 92. the 2010 Hyundai skidded along the ditch line and overturned several times.

The operator of the Chrysler, PT, Cruiser was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision and did not require medical treatment.

The operator of the 2010, Hyundai and his passenger ( Caitlin Moore ) 20, of Stearns were both ejected from the vehicle.

The operator of the 2010, Hyundai was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.

The passenger of the 2010, Hyundai was pronounced deceased at the scene by the McCreary County Coroner.

Drug usage is suspected to be a factor in the collision.

Traffic Crash Reconstructionist Trooper Reed is continuing his investigation and charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Trooper Reed is in charge of the investigation and was assisted at the scene by Trooper Shaler Jones, Trooper Delzie Kelly, McCreary County EMS, Pine Knot Fire Department and the McCreary County Search and Rescue.
