Knox County Shooting Investigation

Date of News Release: 09/20/2013

(Heidrick, Ky.) - On September 20, 2013, Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan received a call at approximately 12:07 a.m. from Knox County Sheriff's office requesting KSP assistance on Morris Lane in reference to a shots fired complaint. Preliminary investigation indicates that Randy Shane Maybery, 30, of Barbourville, had been seen breaking into a vehicle at a residence on Morris Lane. The neighbor contacted 911 and the homeowner of the residence to inform him of the perpetrator. Both the neighbor and homeowner obtained personal firearms and approached the perpetrator who then fled on foot. A short distance later, an altercation took place between the neighbor and perpetrator. A shot was fired by the neighbor striking Mr. Maybery. Mr. Maybery was taken to the Knox County Hospital and was pronounced deceased by Knox County Coroner Mike Blevins. The body has been sent to State Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy. This case is still under investigation by KSP Detective Bryan Johnson who is also being assisted by Knox County Sheriff's Office.

At this time, no arrest have been made. The evidence and statements will be presented to the Knox County Grand Jury.

Names of homeowner and neighbor cannot be released at this time.
