KSP Investigates A Collision on KY 3001

(Cawood, Ky.) -- Kentucky State Police responded to an injury collision on Monday night which left two injured.
According to Trooper Brandon Burton, a 2013 Subaru operated by Ryan Mitchell Long, age 21, from Middletown, PA was traveling southbound on KY 3001 in the Cawood community of Harlan. Howard Smith, of Pennington Gap, VA, operating a 2005 Jeep, was traveling southbound on US Highway 421. Long pulled into the path of Smith's vehicle at the intersection of KY 3001 and US 421. Smith, unable to avoid impact, struck the rear, passenger-side of the Subaru. The Subaru then spun around striking the guard rail. Long and his passenger, a 17 year-old juvenile female , also of Middletown, PA, were airlifted by Air Evac LifeTeam from a landing zone which was set up near the scene by Martins Fork Fire Department. Both were taken to Holsten Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. Mr. Smith, who was wearing a seatbelt, did not receive any injuries. Mr. Long is listed in critical condition and the 17 year-old passenger has been discharged at the time of this release. Both occupants of the Subaru were not wearing seatbelts.
Trooper Burton was assisted on scene by KSP sergeants Jackie Pickrell and Jeremy Lee, troopers Josh Howard, Josh Brashears, and Danny Caudill. Harlan County Emergency Management Director David McGill, crews from Harlan EMS, Inc. and members of the Martins Fork Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
