Fatal Collision on KY 421 in Madison County

Date of News Release: 01/31/2012

(Richmond, KY) -- On Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at 9:25 am EST the Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post received a report of a crash on KY 421/Battlefield Memorial Highway in Madison County. Trooper Darrell Hutchison responded to the scene. Preliminary investigation indicates a silver 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse operated by Betty J. Smith, 53 years old of McKee, KY, was headed north on KY 421. Mrs. Smith's vehicle exited onto the right shoulder of the road, the operator overcorrected and crossed the center line striking a southbound maroon 2012 Chevy Equinox operated by Gregory S. Hackworth, 49 years old of Irvine, KY.

Mrs. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison. Mr. Hackworth was transported to University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment.

Trooper Hutchison was assisted by KSP Detective Chris Short, Madison County Fire, Madison County Rescue and Bluegrass Army Depot Security. The investigation is continuing.
