(Elizabethtown, Ky.) –- The Kentucky State Police Post 04 in Elizabethtown covers 8 counties. They include: Hardin, Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Meade, Breckinridge, Larue, and Grayson Counties.

We will continue to conduct traffic safety checkpoints through February and the rest of 2012, looking for impaired drivers and restraint violations at various locations throughout our post area.

For the month of January 2012, Post 04 Troopers wrote a total of 1,876 citations. We removed 38 drunk drivers from Kentucky roadways and cited 574 speeders. 118 violators were charged for failure to wear a seatbelt. 5 citations were for failure to use a child restraint. We investigated 101 crashes and conducted 2,178 vehicle inspections. 839 motorists were given a courtesy notice in lieu of a traffic citation for minor traffic offenses. We assisted 231 motorists stranded on Kentucky roadways and answered over 1,360 citizen’s complaints. We were involved in 641 special details and conducted over 20 community programs which reached over 1,000 citizens of the Commonwealth. Our Detectives and Troopers opened over 75 criminal cases and made 190 criminal arrests. We contacted over 709 victims of crimes on cases that we are investigating. In total, Post 04 Troopers, Detectives, and Command Staff logged over 9, 937 hours of service for the Kentucky citizens we served.

Preliminary statistics* indicate that twelve people died in twelve separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, Jan. 30, through Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012.

Twelve of the fatalities involved motor vehicles and six of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Campbell, Carter, Fayette, Franklin, Hardin (2), Harlan, Jefferson, Madison, Martin, Monroe and Pike counties. The crash is Martin County involved the suspected use of alcohol.

One double-fatality motor vehicle crash occurred in Pike County.

Through Feb. 5, 2012, preliminary statistics* indicate that 63 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2012. This is 12 more fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2011. There have been 57 motor vehicle fatalities and 31 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Six of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. One crash involved a motorcycle and that victim was wearing a helmet. One crash involved an ATV and the victim was not wearing a helmet. Four crashes involved a pedestrian. Nine deaths have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
