Update to the KSP is Investigating an Officer Involved Shooting in Shelby County

(Frankfort, Ky.) -- On Thursday, January 5, 2012, the Kentucky State Police presented the Shelby County Police involved shooting investigation to the Shelby County Grand Jury. The Shelby County Grand Jury returned no indictment.

Update to the KSP is Investigating an Officer Involved Shooting in Shelby County
Date of News Release: 11/21/2011
(Frankfort, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police investigation has revealed that the Shelbyville dispatch center had received a 911 call reporting that an unknown black male wearing blue shorts with no shirt or shoes was walking on Midland Trail (US-60) holding a pipe and a book. Further stating the male subject had struck a vehicles windshield with a piece of pipe and fled the area on foot. A further 911 call reported a male fitting the same description had broken out a window at a residence on Clifton Court. Two officers from the Shelbyville Police Department responded to a possible burglary on Clifton Court. Neighbors reported to the officers they had heard glass breaking. The Officers located blood at a broken kitchen window at 100 Clifton Court. The Shelbyville officer's gained entry into the residence with the help of a property maintenance worker, who was working on other houses in the area.
The Officer's made repeated announcements identifying themselves and entered into the residence to conduct further investigation due to the apparent burglary and presence of blood in order to insure the safety and security of any possible occupants. Officers located a 6'1" 260 pound male who was deranged and armed with a pipe. The male refused to follow any of the officer's commands. Both officers used their department issued tasers numerous times on the male subject with very limited affect. The male subject physically attacked the police officers by using objects inside the residence and striking both officers several times. The male physically over- powered both officers, leaving one officers injured and incapacitated, unable to defend himself from continued physical assault. In order to stop the assault against the incapacitated officer, the second officer utilized deadly force.
The investigation is continuing by Kentucky State Police and will be presented to a Shelby County Gran Jury at its completion.

Kentucky State Police is Investigating an Officer Involved Shooting in Shelby County
Date of News Release: 11/19/2011
(Frankfort, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police in Frankfort is conducting a death investigation in Shelby County involving the Shelbyville Police Department. On Saturday, November 19, 2011, at 1:41 PM the Shelby County dispatch received a call reporting a male subject walking with a pipe in hand on Midland Trail (US-60) in the limits of Shelbyville, KY.
At 1:44 PM the Shelby County dispatch receive a second call involving the same male subject advising that he had broken out a window at a residence on Clifton Court. At 1:47 PM two Shelbyville officers arrived at 100 Clifton Court and located the male subject. At 2:07 PM the Shelbyville Officers requested assistance and reported an officer down.
Both Shelbyville officers were taken to the Jewish Hospital in Shelbyville by Shelby County EMS for treatment of their injuries. The male subject was taken to the Jewish Hospital Shelbyville suffering from a gun shot wound. The male subject died at the Jewish Hospital in Shelbyville from his injuries.
The Kentucky State Police is conducting a death investigation and an officer involved shooting investigation at the request of the Shelbyville Police Department. The officers have been placed of administrative leave by the Shelbyville Police Department. The investigation by the Kentucky State Police in Frankfort is continuing. Any updates will be released when they are available.
The Shelbyville Officers involved the police shooting are Officer Suzanne Marcum and Frank Willoughby. Officer Marcum has been employed by the Shelbyville Police Department for 17 years. Officer Willoughby has been employed by the Shelbyville Police Department for 6 years. The fatally wounded male is Trey Williams age 18, of Shelbyville, KY. The investigation is continuing by Kentucky State Police.
