POLICE PRESS RELEASE
KSP Awards Funds to Prevent Underage Drinking
Date of News Release: 05/25/2010
(Frankfort, Ky.) -- Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer announced today the agency awarded $354,000 in federal grant funds to enforce underage drinking laws that prohibit the sale, purchase and consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors.
Morehead State University (MSU), located in Rowan County, was one of the grant recipients and will use the funds to provide law enforcement training, educational programming and alcohol-alternative events for students.
Michelle Webb is the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Counselor at MSU and serves as the Project Coordinator for this grant.
"We are very excited to be receiving this grant. The funds will be used to further our educational and prevention activities in an effort to reduce underage drinking on our campus."
Morehead State University will receive $38,755 from the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) grant. Funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and KSP serves as the designated state administrator for grant program.
KSP Captain John Blanton presented a check to Morehead State University in a brief Award Ceremony today.
"The KSP Morehead Post is proud to partner in this important campus project to curb underage drinking at the collegiate level," said Blanton. "We believe that strong community involvement combined with enforcement efforts will contribute to the successful implementation of this program," added Blanton.
The 2008 Kentucky Incentives Prevention (KIP) Survey indicated that 30 percent of tenth graders said that they have drank alcohol in the past 30 days.
The Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) reports that underage drinking costs Kentucky 752 billion dollars each year through medical care and loss of work.
Blanton advised that the two main contributing factors to underage drinking is a youth's ability to illegally purchase alcohol and obtaining someone, over the age of 21, to purchase it for them.
"EUDL grant activities specifically target these factors and are designed to reduce underage drinking by making it harder to gain access to alcohol," remarked Blanton. "Kentucky's youth are the future of the Commonwealth and we must utilize every effort available to protect this most valuable asset."
2010 EUDL Grant Recipients and Funded Projects
KSP will accept applications for the 2011 EUDL block grant beginning December 1, 2010. The grant application package will be posted on the agencies' website at www.kentuckystatepolice.org on that date. EUDL Contact Information: Sherry Bray, State Coordinator (502) 695-6353.
