Jackson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation
Date of News Release: 03/07/2010
(Sand Gap, Ky.) -- Kentucky State Police Post 7, Richmond is currently conducting an officer involved shooting investigation which occurred at a home on US 421 in Sand Gap. On March 6th, 2010 at 11:09 p.m., Trooper Jesse Armstrong and Jackson County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Berry, responded to a domestic altercation at the Darren Moore residence in Sand Gap. Darren Moore's wife had contacted 911 earlier, telling dispatchers that her husband made threats to kill her, and any responding law enforcement officers. She advised that her husband was under the influence of alcohol, and he possessed several weapons in the home. Trooper Armstrong and Deputy Berry approached the residence on foot. Once the officers arrived at the residence, they attempted to make verbal contact with Moore. Moore then appeared on the front porch armed with a shotgun. Moore refused all verbal commands to drop the weapon. Moore then threatened the officers by pointing the weapon in their direction. Trooper Armstrong and Deputy Berry both fired their duty weapons at Moore. Moore was struck once in the left arm and left leg. The officers then administered first aid until the Jackson County EMS arrived on the scene. Moore was transported to the UK Medical Center, and is currently schedule for surgery. Darren Moore, age 26 of Sand Gap, will be charged with the attempted murder of a police officer. The investigation by Lt. Blake Slone is ongoing.
