Update to the Infant Death Investigation at the Roederer Correctional Complex

(LaGrange, Ky.) -- Twenty year-old Ashley N. Cox, of Corbin (KY), has been identified as the mother of the infant girl whose body was discovered at Roederer Correctional Complex. As a result of the investigation by Detective Todd Harwood, Cox is criminally charged with Murder in the 1st Degree and Concealing the Birth of an Infant. Cox has been arrested and will be lodged in the Oldham County Jail.
The preliminary autopsy results revealed that the infant was alive and healthy when born. The father of the child is unknown to KSP investigators at this time. The cause of death will be determined when the final autopsy findings are released. The case remains open and under investigation by Detective Todd Harwood with the Kentucky State Police.

Date of News Release: 03/08/2010
(LaGrange, Ky.) -- The Roederer Correctional Complex notified the Kentucky State Police at 4:04 p.m. that a female visitor had been transported by Oldham County EMS to Baptist East hospital for a miscarriage that occurred in one of the facility's restrooms at 11:07 a.m. At approximately 4:00 p.m., it was determined that the female visitor did not have a miscarriage, but instead gave birth to a full term baby. Prison officials then contacted KSP and initiated a search of the facility for the baby. The newborn baby was discovered by corrections staff hidden inside a trash receptacle at 4:29 p.m. The baby was pronounced dead by Oldham County Coroner Brett Donner 4:42 p.m.
An autopsy is being performed to determine the manner of death. The incident remains under investigation by Detective Todd Harwood. More information will follow as information develops.
