KSP Awards Funds to Prevent Underage Drinking
Date of News Release: 05/25/2010
(Bowling Green, Ky.) -- Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer announced today the agency awarded $354,000 in federal grant funds to enforce underage drinking laws that prohibit the sale, purchase and consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors.
Allen County Sherriff's Department located in Scottsville, Kentucky was one of the grant recipients and will use the funds to provide educational programming in high schools. The Sherriff's Department will utilize an 'impaired driving' cart for a hand's-on exercise that will allow students to see first hand the danger and difficulty of driving impaired.
Sherriff Sam Carter developed the program concept and will serve as the Project Coordinator for this project.
Allen County Sheriff's Department will receive $12,000 from the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) grant. Funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and KSP serves as the designated state administrator for grant program.
KSP Captain Bill Payton presented a check to Sheriff Sam Carter in a brief Award Ceremony today.
"The KSP Bowling Green Post is proud to partner with this important project to curb underage drinking at the high school level," said Payton. "We believe that strong community involvement combined with educational efforts will contribute to the successful implementation of this program," added Payton.
The 2008 Kentucky Incentives Prevention (KIP) Survey indicated that 30 percent of tenth graders said that they have drank alcohol in the past 30 days.
The Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) reports that underage drinking costs Kentucky 752 billion dollars each year through medical care and loss of work.
Payton advised that the two main contributing factors to underage drinking is a youth's ability to illegally purchase alcohol and obtaining someone, over the age of 21, to purchase it for them.
"EUDL grant activities specifically target these factors and are designed to reduce underage drinking by making it harder to gain access to alcohol," remarked Payton. "Kentucky's youth are the future of the Commonwealth and we must utilize every effort available to protect this most valuable asset."
