Theft by Deception Investigation

(Bowling Green, KY) -- In the last few weeks, several Kentuckians have received e-mails that appear to be from different lending institutions' fraud prevention departments stating their passwords have expired. The e-mails ask them to click on a link to change their password. This link takes them to a fake website that closely mirrors their bank's website and asks them to enter their user name, password, and a new password.

On February 18, 2010 Independence bank contacted the Kentucky State Police & Bowling Green Police Department indicating 2 separate banks, one in Bowling Green City limits & the other in the county, had been defrauded of $24,500 which had been illegally transferred via the internet from one account to another. A female subject entered Independence bank yesterday morning & withdrew $15,700 from that account. That subject then wired $7,600 via Western Union to Nigeria through four different transactions. The Kentucky State Police located the female subject, was able to stop two of those transactions before they went through, & recovered most of the other money that was taken. This subject had been contacted via internet by an unknown subject suspected to be from Nigeria who told the suspect she would receive compensation if she made these transactions for them. The suspects claimed to be businessmen and gave her elaborate stories of why & where this money is going. Of the $24,500 all but $4,100 has been recovered. The case will be turned over to grand jury who decide if charges will be brought against the female suspect. As of now, no additional information is being released concerning this investigation. Investigation continues.
