One Killed in a Single Vehicle Collision in Hopkins County

(Madisonville, Ky.) -- Laura L. Stephens, age 46 of Dawson Springs, KY, was operating a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound on the Wendell H. Ford Western Kentucky Parkway between the 26 and 27 mile-marker. Ms. Stephens was traveling in the left (passing) lane passing another vehicle that was in the right (slow) lane. For an unknown reason, Ms. Stephens lost control of the vehicle and traveled into the median. The vehicle became airborne and landed in the westbound lanes. It struck a guardrail and exited the westbound side of the roadway. The vehicle overturned several times ejecting Ms. Stephens. The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side in a wooded area. Ms. Stephens, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hopkins County Coroner's Office. The crash remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police. Trooper Matt Foster is investigating the crash that occurred on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 5:20 p.m. Sgt. Michael Williams, Tpr. Carlo Anderson, Tpr. Brandon McPherson, Tpr. Ben Sawyer, the Dawson Springs Police Department, the Dawson Springs Fire Department, the Charleston Fire Department, Medical Center Ambulance Service, and the Hopkins County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene.
