Operation K.S.P. Kentucky's Summer Prevention Campaign

(Madisonville, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police are currently in the midst of a concentrated, enforcement effort which targets inattentive and reckless driving on Kentucky's highways. This program is known as Operation K.S.P. (Kentucky's Summer Prevention Campaign). From now through September 6th, troopers across the Commonwealth have been directed to be highly vigilant in detecting driving habits which have shown a history of causing serious injury and deadly collisions. This program started on June 1st.

Statewide in 2009, there were a total of 226 lives that were lost on Kentucky's highways during the period of June 1st through September 6th. During this same period in the Post 2 District, there were 321 crashes with 93 resulting in injury and 3 deaths. Of those crashes, 20 were alcohol and/or drug related and 1 resulted in a fatality. Driver inattention/distracted driving were involved in 113 of those crashes. These numbers are even more staggering when you realize that a majority of these deaths could have been prevented by simply practicing safe driving habits. Limiting driving distractions, such as cell phone use, can greatly reduce the possibility of a collision. Also, having plenty of rest prior to travel can result in a safer trip.

In an effort to reduce injury and fatal collisions this summer, troopers all across Kentucky will conduct over 1,000 traffic safety checkpoints. These traffic safety checkpoints will assist troopers in detecting unsafe driving habits as well as impaired drivers. All vehicle occupants are reminded that Kentucky has a primary seat belt law which requires everyone in the vehicle to be restrained by a seat belt, child restraint, or booster seat. Troopers will also conduct saturated patrols in high crash areas looking for any unsafe driving behaviors.

Driver inattention is the number one cause of crashes in Kentucky. The responsibility lies with all licensed drivers to see that they practice safe, driving habits. Remember to do your part.
