News Release

Drug Investigation in Breathitt County

Date of News Release: 01/22/2010

(Hazard, Ky.) -- On 01/21/2010 Kentucky State Police in Hazard along with officers from Drug Enforcement Special Investigation/East, HIDTA Drug Task Force, and UNITE conducted a buy/bust drug operation in Jackson, Breathitt County. Darrell Baker, age 47 of Mount Sterling attempted to sell 195 30mg Oxycodone tablets to Det. Ben Campbell acting in an undercover capacity. Baker showed up at the location concealing a loaded .38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver. Baker was taken into custody without incident. Baker was charged with Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree and Possession of a handgun by a Convicted Felon. Baker was lodged in the Three Forks Regional Detention Center pending indictment. The case has been adopted by the ATF for presentation to a federal grand jury. The investigation is continuing by TFO Det. John Couch.

Additional information led detectives to develop probable cause for a search warrant in Bath County. Post 08 Morehead street-level was contacted for assistance in the execution of the search warrant.

(Morehead, KY) On January 21, 2010, Units from Kentucky State Police in Hazard, Morehead, Drug Enforcement Special Investigations East, HIDTA Drug Task Force, and UNITE served the search warrant on the residence of John and Sherry Townsend 3 miles west of Owingsville on US 60 in Bath County in connection with the buy/bust in Jackson, Ky. Both were arrested; John Townsend was charged with Trafficking in Controlled Substance 1st, Receiving Stolen Property (Firearm), and Tampering With Physical Evidence; Sherry Townsend was charged with Trafficking in Controlled Substance 1st. A large sum of money and narcotics were also seized as a result of the search warrant.
