Fatal Traffic Crash in Whitley County

(London, Ky.) -- On Saturday, June 05, 2010, at 10:20 PM the Kentucky State Police, Post 11, in London was notified of a vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic crash at the six mile marker on Interstate 75 in Whitley County, KY.

Upon arrival KSP Traffic Crash Reconstructionist Trooper Greg Hill determined that Cassandra L. Byrd, 31, of Lexington, KY entered the southbound lanes of I-75, on foot, into the path of a 2005, Honda, Pilot operated by Lawrence Jutzi, 37, of Florence, KY.

Ms. Byrd, who was struck by the vehicle and fatally injured, was attempting to flee from custody after being placed under arrest by a Whitley County Sheriff's Deputy.

Mr. Jutzi was not injured.

Trooper Hill is continuing the investigation and was assisted by officers from the Kentucky State Police, the Whitley County Coroners Office, the Whitley County Sheriff's Office, the Williamsburg Fire Department and the Whitley County EMS.
