Operation K.S.P.
Date of News Release: 06/21/2010
(Harlan, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police have developed a summer enforcement campaign Called "Operation K.S.P." (Kentucky Summer Prevention Plan.) The enforcement effort started June 1st and will conclude at midnight on Monday September 6, 2010. This campaign will include over 1,000 safety checkpoints statewide in a concerted effort to reduce the injury and fatality rates across the Commonwealth.
Last year between June 1st and September 6th, 226 people were killed in Kentucky due to motor vehicle crashes. During that same time frame in the Post 10 area of Knox, Bell and Harlan Counties, there were 152 crashes with 39 injuries and six deaths. Thirteen of those crashes were involving alcohol or drugs that resulted in no fatalities. Fifty-five of the crashes were caused by driver inattention/distracted driving with one fatality.
It is important to note that "driver inattention" is the number one cause of crashes in Kentucky and that the driver needs to be "road ready" (plenty of rest and no distractions) when getting behind the wheel.
