News Release

Pike County Fatal Collision

Date of News Release: 09/03/2009

(Pikeville, Ky.) -- On September 2nd, 2009, at approximately 8:33pm, Kentucky State Police in Pikeville received a call of an injury accident on U.S. 460 in Pike county. Stephen Balo was traveling eastbound on Ky 460 at Draffin when the dirt bike in which he was driving struck a 1996 Chevy Beretta driven by Deborah Ratliff of Pond Creek as she was making a turn in the westbound lane. Ratliff was not injured in the accident.

Mr. Balo then collided with a 2003 Pontiac van driven by Elva Norman of East Shelbiana Road. Two passengers that were in the Norman vehicle were treated and released for minor injuries. Balo and his passenger, 22-year-old Eric Hatfield of Elkhorn City, were both ejected from the dirt bike.

Mr. Balo was airlifted by Wings aeromedical to Johnson City Memorial Hospital and Mr. Hatfield was pronounced dead on the scene by Pike County Deputy Coroner Denver Bailey. Next of kin was notified.

The accident is being investigated by Trooper Jamie Rose. He was assisted on scene by Sergeant Randy Woods, Trooper Jerry Perkins, Trooper Jim Anderson, Elkhorn City Ambulance, and Ferrells Creek Fire Department.
